In this article, we will learn how to activate and use Google Chat. Google Chat is an instant messaging platform similar to text messages on your phone and group messaging services like Slack. You can easily message individual users or groups of users, create rooms for classes, groups, or teams to be used for projects, ongoing discussions, and more.
Google Chat is directly integrated into Gmail, but also has standalone apps for the web, iOS, and Android devices. If you are looking for a way to interact with colleagues or students in real-time, it may be a great solution. Let’s take a closer look at how Google Chat works. When you visit Gmail, you may have noticed the Chat and Rooms blocks on the left. In the chat block, you’ll see recent conversations with individuals or small groups. You can create new messages by either clicking on people you’ve already messaged or by clicking the plus button to message someone new. Below the Chat block, you’ll see the Room block. This will show you any ongoing conversations in Rooms, you’ve created or joined. To create new Rooms, click the plus button.
Within the Gmail window, when you click on a Chat conversation, a pop-up will be seen in the lower right of the screen, just like when you are composing an email. If you want a larger view of the chat, click the expand button. In addition to a larger view, you get access to additional options and settings, found in this dropdown for the individual conversations, and this dropdown to show your general availability. Although you do have access to basic functions in Rooms through Gmail, this is a good time to visit the Google Chat web app. The web app is dedicated just to Chat and Rooms, so the Gmail aspect is removed.
By visiting the web app at chat.google.com, you'll access the web version of Chat and Rooms. Chat will look similar to the expanded view found within Gmail. To start exploring rooms, create a room by clicking the plus sign next to Rooms. Give the room a name, invite some participants and select how you want the posts to show. The default will be that posts and replies appear as a continuous stream.
If you select “use threaded replies” you can compartmentalize conversations according to the topic. The best way to get started exploring Chat and Rooms is by using it. Start out with some colleagues (or your favorite ed tech coach) and then introduce it to your students. Bots add little bits of extra functionality into Chats and Rooms. There are a number of bots to choose from.
Some, like Zoom and Google Drive, are ideal for school settings. Others are fun (like Giphy) but may be inappropriate for school use. Bots are added to conversations just like people are. To activate a bot in a conversation, type the @ sign followed by the bots name, and then a command.
Different boats have different commands available, and all have a basic tutorial outlining what commands are available and what exactly they do. You should always test out bots on your own before you introduce them for use with your students. If you want How do I fix the slow charging?
