Beginning in November, WhatsApp will only work on devices running Android 4.1 or higher

Remember the Samsung Galaxy Trend series, which included devices such as the Galaxy Trend II and the Galaxy Trend Lite and was available in Kenya for a short time? Or the unstoppable Galaxy SII? Or how about the Galaxy SIII mini? What about the Galaxy Ace 2?

Remember when Huawei's gadgets were still referred to as Ascend? And what about the LG Optimus? Like Samsung's Galaxy?

You might be wondering what that walk down memory lane has to do with anything, but that is exactly the objective of this post. Those devices are now meant to be little more than memories. No, it's not the Maroon 5 song, but you get the idea.

The aforementioned Samsung Galaxy smartphones, as well as numerous others in the Huawei Ascend and LG Optimus lines, are among the more than 40 handsets whose users will be unable to access WhatsApp beginning November 1, 2021.

The complete list is as follows:

    • One-Touch Evo 7 by Alcatel
    • Huawei models include the Ascend G740, Ascend Mate, Ascend D Quad XL, Ascend D1 Quad XL, Ascend P1 S, and Ascend D2.
    • LG's Lucid 2, Optimus F7, Optimus F5, Optimus L3 II Dual, Optimus F5, Optimus L5, Optimus L5 II, Optimus L5 Dual, Optimus L3 II, Optimus L7, Optimus L7 II Dual, Optimus L7 II, Optimus F6, Enact, Optimus L4 II Dual, Optimus F3, Optimus L4 II, Optimus L2 II,4
    • Samsung's models include the Galaxy Trend Lite, Galaxy Trend II, Galaxy SII, Galaxy S3 small, Galaxy Xcover 2, Galaxy Core, and Galaxy Ace 2.
    • Sony's Xperia Miro, Xperia Neo L, and Xperia Arc S.
    • ZTE models include the Grand S Flex, ZTE V956, Grand X Quad V987, and Grand Memo.
    • Archos 53 Platinum, HTC Desire 500, Caterpillar Cat B15, Wiko Cink Five, Wiko Darknight, Lenovo A820, UMi X2, Faea F1, and THL W8 are among the others.

    Why is this the case?

Nothing out of the ordinary. WhatsApp has made it a habit to discontinue support for older device variants every other year. In the case of the above-mentioned devices, they are running earlier versions of Android, and there are obviously not enough of them in use around the world to justify preserving the kind of resources required to continue supporting them.

According to a statement on its website, WhatsApp will only support devices running Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, in the future.

Google canceled Play Services support for Android Jelly Bean earlier this month, thus destroying the out-of-date version of the world's most popular mobile operating system.
